Nothing is more frustrating for a physician than seeing a patient fail to respond to treatment. For patients with
depression whose symptoms don’t improve with medication, a new treatment provided by Novant Health
Neurosciences & Psychiatry Institute may help. It’s transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and doctors are
impressed with the results they’re seeing.

TMS directly stimulates the brain using a standard MRI strength magnet. It helps to rebuild connections within
the patient’s brain and can lead to dramatic results. Patients tolerate this treatment well, which offers fewer side
effects than antidepressants and does not require anesthesia. It is completed with daily, 20-minute sessions for
six weeks. Many patients enjoy a lengthy remission and have more success with medications if they become
depressed again.
