Health Hematology
Kimberly Green, DO, a board-certified
hematology/oncologist has joined Omotayo
Fasan, MD, Alan Skarbnik,
MD, and David Miller, MD,
at Novant Health Hematology.
Born and raised in West
Columbia, SC, Dr. Green
received a Master’s in Clinical
KimberlyGreen,DO and Laboratory Sciences at
the Medical University of South Carolina
in Charleston before receiving a Doctor of
Osteopathic Medicine degree from Kansas
City University of Medicine and Biosciences
in Kansas City, MO. Training would take
her to the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in
for an Internal Medicine residency where
she discovered her passion for taking care
of patients with hematologic malignancies.
Green then completed a hematologic/oncology
fellowship at the University of Colorado and
went on to complete an additional fellowship
in adult hematologic malignancies and blood
& marrow transplantation at the University
of California San Francisco. Her clinical and
research interests lie in plasma cell disorders,
amyloidosis, and cellular therapy.

n Transplantation and Cellular Therapy
Program Comes to Novant Health
The Novant Health Transplantation and
Cellular Therapy Program cares for patients with
hematologic malignancies and offers advanced
cellular therapies.
Fully accredited by the Foundation for
Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), the
program uses a multidisciplinary approach with
the providers, pharmacists, coordinators, nurses,
social workers, dieticians, transfusion laboratory surgical procedures in the U.S., according to a
technicians and pathologists, regularly meeting
to discuss optimizations to patient care.
The Transplantation and Cellular
Therapy Program evaluates patients for
appropriateness of autologous transplantation
to treat myeloma, amyloid, relapsed Hodgkin
lymphoma, relapsed DLBCL, mantle cell
lymphoma, germ cell tumors, multi-agent
chemotherapy, immunotherapy and CAR
T-cell therapy.

Hospital Earns Blue Distinction
Center Designation for Quality in
Knee and Hip Replacement Surgeries
Blue Shield of North Carolina has
designated Novant Health Charlotte
Orthopedic Hospital as a Blue Distinction
Center+ for Knee and Hip Replacement. Blue
Distinction Centers are nationally recognized
by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association
as facilities that show a commitment to
delivering high-quality patient safety and
better health outcomes.

Facilities designated as Blue Distinction
Centers+ for knee and hip replacement
demonstrate expertise in total knee and total
hip replacement surgeries, resulting in fewer
patient complications and readmissions.
Designated hospitals also must maintain
national accreditation. In addition to meeting
these quality thresholds, hospitals designated
as Blue Distinction Centers+ are on average 20
percent more cost-efficient in an episode of care “B” letter grade
compared to other hospitals.
Knee and hip replacement procedures remain
some of the most commonly performed, elective
2018 study released by the American Academy
of Orthopedic Surgeons. In 2014 there were
370,770 total hip replacements and 680,150
total knee replacements.
On Monday, May 4, Novant Health began
performing non-time sensitive and non-emergent
surgeries and procedures across the system.
These appointments were paused on March 18 in
response to increasing cases of COVID-19 and
the need to protect patients and team members.
Enhanced safety measures were rolled
out, including patient and team member
screenings, required masking of patient-facing

team members, and enhanced cleaning and
disinfection processes.

Commitment to Safety and Quality
by The Leapfrog Group
On April 30, The Leapfrog Group, a
national nonprofit that evaluates the safety,
quality and patient experience provided by
hospitals across the country, released its spring
2020 Hospital Safety Grades. Novant Health is
proud to share a continued improvement in its
safety and quality scores.
Letter grades from A to F are assigned to
U.S. hospitals based on their ability to prevent
errors, injuries, accidents and infections, and
improve patient satisfaction.
The Leapfrog Group has recognized Novant
Health’s commitment to safety and quality by
assigning its acute care facilities nine A’s and
three B’s. The scores are as follows:
