Epilepsy Treatment
More than 3.4 million people in the
United States have epilepsy, and of those,
nearly 500,000 are children.
Novant Health recently
announced a world-class
program to treat pediatric
epilepsy, offering some of

Christopher Beatty, MD,
and Erin Kiehna, MD, have worked
together for the past two years developing
a comprehensive pediatric epilepsy
program at Novant Health. The goal is
simple: care to benefit every pediatric
patient with epilepsy.
As a top-tier epilepsy treatment
center, Beatty and Kiehna use a range of
advanced diagnostic tools to understand
each patient’s condition and inform
their treatment plan. Their unique,
team-based approach ensures patients
receive streamlined care from experts in
neurology and seizure treatment.
Novant Health offers the following
treatment options for children with
seizures or epilepsy:
• Nutritional therapy, including the
ketogenic and modified Atkins diets
• Medications
• A vagus nerve stimulator, which sends
mild pulses to affected parts of the brain
• Physical therapy, occupational therapy
and speech therapy
• Hospitalization for seizure monitoring
• Brain surgery
Board-certified and fellowship-trained
specialists provide comprehensive
evaluations for diagnoses and epilepsy
surgeries, including intracranial
electrodes and laser ablation. Other
services include intensive neurodiagnostic
and EEG video monitoring, extensive
neuropsychological, medication and
device treatments. The team provides a
first seizure evaluation for children who
have had a seizure for the first time, as
well as second opinions for children who
have received a diagnosis of epilepsy.
If your patient has not shown
improvement with medication, it may
be time to refer them to Novant Health’s
Pediatric Epilepsy Center. Every effort
is made to see each patient as quickly
as possible.

Dr. Beatty is board-certified in child
neurology, clinical neurophysiology and
Case Western Reserve University School
of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. He
completed residencies in pediatrics and
pediatric neurology at the University of
Washington, and then went on to complete
a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology
at the University of Washington.
Dr. Kiehna is a board-certified pediatric
neurosurgeon. She attended medical school
at Yale University before completing her
residency in neurological surgery at the
University of Virginia Health System. She
then completed her fellowship training
at the Pediatric Neurological Surgery
Hospital for Sick Children in Australia.
Kiehna joined Novant Health in 2016 after
being on staff at UCLA Mattel Children’s
Hospital in Los Angeles.

Schortz, MD, minimally
invasive gynecological

pain specialist. Dr. Schortz
completed a general surgery
internship at Albany
Jed Schortz,MD Medical Center in New
York, prior to completing his obstetrics
and gynecology residency program at St.
Barnabas Medical Center in New Jersey
in 2015. He completed a fellowship
in minimally invasive gynecological
surgery and chronic pelvic pain at Albert
Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore
Medical Center in 2017.
